About
Why Mars?
Earth has billboards.
Mars didn’t.
So we fixed that.
Marsbid is a public interactive map where brands sponsor virtual ground on Mars. The planet is divided along real lines of latitude and longitude into 182 parcels. You buy one, or a block of them, and your name sits on that ground for anyone who spins the globe.
The map is built on NASA’s Mars model and NASA’s imagery, both public domain. Parcels holding a named feature take its name from the IAU gazetteer, so Olympus Mons is called Olympus Mons and its parcel is genuinely the ground between 15–30°N and 220–240°E, which is where Olympus Mons actually is.
Nothing else about this is serious, and we would rather say so than pretend otherwise.
What you are actually buying
A sponsorship placement on this website. A rectangle of the map with your name written across it, a page of your own, and a link out to your site that we count clicks on, so you can see whether it was worth it.
Parcels are digital placements. They do not represent ownership of land, property rights, mineral rights, or any legal interest in Mars or anywhere else. No government, space agency or treaty body recognises them. Neither does anyone except this website.
The Outer Space Treaty of 1967 is quite clear that nobody can own Mars. We are not arguing with it. We are selling advertising space on a picture of it.
182 parcels of Mars are still going spare, from $1.
